DC Students Succeed Sends FY27 Budget priorities to Mayor Bowser
This week, DC Students Succeed sent Mayor Muriel Bowser a letter calling for strong education investments in her upcoming fiscal year 2027 budget.
During her tenure as mayor, the education sector has benefited from $2.8B in additional per pupil funding for the policies and programs that ensure our students are prepared, engaged, and supported regardless of their zip code and that our schools are among the fastest-improving in the nation. Our powerful progress is the result of sustained policy leadership and consistent investment. We know that our enviable growth in education drives our economic vitality.
While there is much to be proud of, we also recognize the urgency of a system wherein too many of our most vulnerable learners are not flourishing. Despite real challenges to the District’s budget and revenues, you have made our students and schools a top priority, year in and year out.
The letter urges the mayor to continue the deep and impactful investments equipping every child with the academic supports, college and career options, and funding to meet their needs. Recognizing the realities of the current fiscal climate, our recommendations focus on the existing measures we have seen succeed for students, families, communities, and our city that accelerate academic progress; strengthen our system of public school choice; expanded career and post-secondary pathways; and support the whole child.
