Strengthening DC’s System of Public School Choice is Good for All Students
By Ariel Johnson, Executive Director, DC Charter School Alliance
One of the strengths of the DC public education system is the number of high-quality school options that students have to choose from across the city. The variety of education models, including multi-generational, Montessori and bilingual, ensure students and their families can find a school community that fits their unique needs. As Mayor Bowser and the Council work together on the city’s budget, we recommend continuing to make investments in the public education system so schools are well-resourced and families continue to have the opportunity to select the educational option that supports their students’ needs.
Prioritizing Safety and Attendance
The issue of students being chronically absent is one of the most urgent challenges facing DC schools today. Quite simply, when students aren’t in school, they aren’t learning. A key barrier to attendance is student safety—many young people do not feel secure traveling to and from school. Programs like the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety’s DC Safe Passage Zones are making a positive impact, but scaling these initiatives is crucial. Increased investment in safe and reliable transportation will help students get to class consistently, which positively influences their social-emotional wellbeing and academic success.
Investing in Facilities and Educators
For students to thrive, they need safe and well-maintained learning environments. Rising costs for essential infrastructure—HVAC systems, elevators, and other critical facilities—pose a challenge for many charter schools. Continued support through the charter facilities allotment is necessary to provide the resources schools need to maintain high-quality spaces for learning.
Our educators also must receive fair and competitive compensation. The Uniform Per Student Funding Formula (UPSFF) must keep pace with the cost of living to attract and retain top talent in DC’s classrooms. High-quality teachers are the most significant factor in student success, and sustained investment in their compensation and professional development will help drive continued students’ academic growth.
Bridging the Gap Between High School and Career
Academic achievement isn’t just about test scores, it’s about preparing students for their future success. DC is a leader in public adult education, and in preparing DC students for the future by investing in career and technical education (CTE) programs, including Advanced Technical Centers (ATCs) and Dual Enrollment opportunities. Stronger partnerships with local employers can further expand internships and apprenticeships, ensuring students are equipped with the skills needed for high-demand careers. By strengthening these pathways, we can help students seamlessly transition from high school to the workforce, empowering them to thrive in the economy of tomorrow.
A Collective Commitment to DC Student Success
Education is the foundation of our city’s future, and by prioritizing strategic investments, we can continue building a system where every child, regardless of background or school, has the opportunity to succeed. The DC Charter School Alliance is committed to working alongside our partners to make this vision a reality.
